Cramming feels productive and works terribly. The students who walk into IGCSE, CBSE or board exams calm and confident aren’t smarter — they prepared in a smarter rhythm. Here’s the approach our tutors use.
Start earlier, in smaller doses
Begin structured revision weeks out, not nights before. Short daily sessions move knowledge into long-term memory; all-nighters don’t.
Revise actively, not passively
Re-reading notes creates a false sense of “I know this.” Instead, test yourself: cover the page and recall, redo problems from scratch, explain a concept aloud. Retrieval is what makes it stick.
Practise with real past papers
Past papers reveal the exam’s style, timing and traps. Sitting full papers under timed conditions turns knowledge into exam performance — a very different skill.
Turn mistakes into a checklist
Every wrong answer in practice is a gift: it shows exactly what to fix. Keep an “error log” and revisit it — it’s the fastest route to marks.
Master exam technique, not just content
Reading the command words, allocating time by marks, showing working for method marks — technique often separates a B from an A.
Protect sleep and calm
A rested brain recalls far more than an exhausted one. In the final days, taper the workload and prioritise sleep. Confidence is preparation you can feel.
Do this consistently and exam season stops being a panic — it becomes the moment your child gets to show what they already know.
